I ride the Roubaix in the article linked above and it is my go to bike; albeit it is heavy. Having just returned from Majorca where I rented my dream Pinarello I think it is time to lavish some love on my Roubaix. I am also riding the North Coast 500 miler in June so want to really make the most of it. I am selling my Planet X to fund the upgrade and may add a little more giving a budget of a grand (no more).
The mechanical disc brakes are poor but they allow me to run 32mm tyres on my commute. Ideally I would like to move to hydraulics. The drivetrain is nine-speed Shimano Sora, the wheels quite basic Axis 2.0s so you see my problem.
How can I make best use of my grand? I would love to hear your views.
Thanks,
Stew4rt

Sloppy (or dopey). What part do you not get?0 -
Wheels are generally a good place to start, managed to knock about 400g off my bike by spending £200 on lighter wheels. The Sora is also quite a heavy groupset, if you want to go hydraulics, you will need to completely upgrade your groupset to something like the Shimano 105 (which will probably take most of your budget). But if you want to loose a few hundred g on the cheap, I would have a look at upgrading your rear cassette with a Shimano XT one and also replace your front chain rings with 9 speed Tiagra ones.0

Hydraulic 105 approx £500, £60 for rotors. I'd then look at Ceri wheels, ard23 disc.
The above is an example of what I thought about doing some time ago. My old bike was similar to yours, average mechanical disc and sora. Mine worked out better to buy a new bike with 105 hydraulic disc rather than upgrade.0 -
Its a great frame with rubbish groupset and wheels
I'd spend £500 on an Ultegra 6800 11 speed group, which will save a kilo over the Sora ( assume the Ultegra sti's will work with the cable discs ) and another £400 or so on wheels ( which will need to be 11 speed )
I have just done something similar with my wifes Ruby- fitted Fulcrum 3 wheels ( 1500g 11 speed ) and a full Ultegra group with 11/32 cassette, medium cage derailleur and 52/36 chainset- total cost £900
Might have been cheaper to sell it and buy another bike but the frame is limited edition Komen colours in black and pink which she loves
The bike as stock was 10kg, now its just over 8kg, the weight saving due to the changes mentioned above plus switching to Schwalbe ultremo tyres and specialized turbo inner tubes which saves 500g or so0
