Ive been looking at shoes for flats and seeing what users opinions are really as £90 + for shoes seem expensive, but do they have a much stiffer midsole compared to a skate shoe or other tougher type shoes??

Yes they are expensive, but if you buy it right you buy it once.
The sole is optimised for strong adherence with the flat pedals.0 -
Scour the sales and you'll pay a lot less.I don't do smileys.

depends on what shoes you buy as shimano am7 are around 76 on crc. five tens are always going to be expensive do to the brand name etc.0

I always liked Five Tens. Nice solid thick sole and they lasted. I tried some cheap shoes and my gnarly flat pedals always chewed through em.0

I like the adidas ones, and I use them day to day for walking around too, so they aren't "just" a MTB shoe.

Chewed through the sole of a pair of 5:10 impacts in 6 weeks. Not suited to everyone, very soft soles.0

Used vans skate shoes for years, switched to 5.10 freeriders a few years ago, even better grip with them, soles still in good condition.
I've also used a few pairs of my merrell walking shoes and haven't noticed the feet slipping.0 -
I've always just worn something like this, nice stiff sole, and good for general mucking about shoes as well.

agree with larkim on the adiddas terrex trail shoes. Got mine for £80. Really grip the pedals and are spot on for walking to. Really comfy.0
