Commuting on a Fixie

Borrowed a fixie from a mate for a while. First 2 rides (13 miles e/w, undulating route) and my average speed has gone up by a not insignificant amount compared to my conventional road bike. Bearing in mind the fixie is certainly not high end, with heavy steel frame, heavy wheels etc, this was a bit of a surprise.
I thought it would help with the training over time, and make me quicker when I return to the normal bike, I did not expect to be quicker on the fixie itself. Clearly not working hard enough before!!!
Now thinking about a half decent fixie for my N+1. Better than the steel framed, low end retro / hipster bikes, but at a reasonable budget. Any suggestions? What kind of sum should I be budgeting?
