Swapping Cogs in crankset
Am doing the Tour of the peaks next weekend, and other derbyshire/Yorkshire exploits in teh next few months and wanted to know whether I can swap out my 105 cogs on my crankset and replace them with compact 50-34 from a Tiagra crankset which I have on another bike. I know there is chain and derailleur setting up needed but should I be able to make the changeover with what Ive got?!

More information needed. However assuming they have the same number of arms (4 or 5 arms) and they are the same basic design, it will depend on the bcd of your 105 chainrings - bcd (bolt circle diameter) on a compact is usually 110 mm, on a 'standard' 39/53 chainset it's usually 130mm. have a look here:

You could always swap the whole chainset, would that be easier?"It must be true, it's on the internet" - Winston Churchill0 -
Yeah I thought that too but wanted to save some money!
Same number which is 5 arms, the only concern Ive got is that the Tiagra compact 50-34 was several years before the 105 52-39.0 -
Probably easier to just swap the whole chainset.I'm left handed, if that matters.0

Just swap chainsets, lower the front mech and re- tension the cable. Should take 15-20 mins - less if you know what you are doing - although as you refer to 'cogs' not chain-rings on second thoughts maybe get someone else to do it for you?FFS! Harden up and grow a pair0

If they are both HTII external bottom bracket types where the spindle is attached to the spider and the NDS crank arm held on with 2 pinch bolts, then just swapping the chainsets complete is by far the easiest option.
I've got 2 bikes and 3 chainsets and happily swap them depending on what I'm doing. Very quick when you've done it a couple of times.0
