Can you identify these riders?

Hi - a friend is buying some products for her cycling mad husband with the picture below on them... can any of you help identify the riders in the photos? (Did a google image search for them but it was unsuccessful.)

Is the rider in front Hugo Koblet?

CY6NB.jpg

There are also 2 British riders behind, but it's quite hard to see them:

Is one Tommy Simpson?

I'm guessing the image is from a Tour in the sixties when national rather than trade teams competed against each other...

Any ideas?

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

The photo is most likely from 1955 - the first year GB sent a national team. The Swiss team rode with numbers beginning with 7.

Koblet had already done his last Tour by then, so it's not him.

Ah, here you go. Ken Mitchell and Freddie Krebs (and unnamed Swiss rider), 1955

Ferdi Kubler - he has a longer nose than that pic makes it look but Could be. Fred Krebs for the guy without a hat?

Unlikely to be Kubler. Mitchell and Krebs were in the autobus, Kubler nearer the sharp end

This is that day's stage: http://www.letour.fr/HISTO/us/TDF/1955/900/etape.html

Annoyingly you can't quite see the number on the Swiss rider's back. Otherwise we could use Rich's start list to identify him.

I'm actually more interested in solving this than watching Romandie today.

    Might I offer up #73 Emilio Croci-Torti

After cycling he became an artist. He died in 2013

  • Re the swiss rider - The number after the 7 on his back looks like it could be an 8. If so, is it Otto Meili?

Definitely Otto Meili. That is a 78 on his back.

This question has been asked on the interweb before.

It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.

Cor - you people are amazing! I thought this thread would sink and die without a chase whilst I was too busy at work to keep an eye on it... I send my heartfelt thanks by mashing my thumb into the assorted emojis on offer  :) :?:

Wow good work. As the cycling mad person in question I now need to know what road they are descending on, what position they are in the race and what they had for breakfast

The descent is probably Vasson or La Turbie, which were the final passes of the day. The climbs that day were: Vars, Cayolle, Vasson and La Turbie

    Their stage results were:
    65. Fred Krebs +48'05
    70. Otto Meili 48'59
    78. Ken Mitchell +55'17

The Swiss rider had Alpen and Toblerone for breakfast. The Brits had black pudding and porridge.

Incidently, here's another photo of the trio (someone may recognise the view)

Easy there... Rich already thinks he's the smartest! Don't have him thinking he's the best looking as well...

Seriously though, good efforts from everyone above.

I may have delusions about my intelligence, but I've never had them about my looks (short, bald & fat)

It's weird how you form an image of someone online.

I always thought of Rich as an ex hockey player who keeps himself in reasonable shape. With hair.

Ex? I'll have you know I'm playing in the Hockey Wales Challenge Final tomorrow: https://hockeywales.altiusrt.com/matches/27
As for keeping in shape - I'm a goalkeeper, not much running around

Noooooooooooooooo! You can't be short, bald and fat Rich! That's the exact opposite of my longtime image of you. Please don't tell me the 'N95' has nothing to do with your love of old Nokia/Symbian phones either...
