130mm rear spacing & rim brakes that take 28mm tyres BSA...

A very niche market I know  but whats out there?

Something light but not expensive say alu witn carbon fork. (dis they even ever make many?).

If single speed are so hip why not 8 speed downtube bikes

  • Try SJS Cycles or Spa Cycles. Steel or Ti though, not Alu.

Maybe get a frame builder to fit some to a frame?

    May be worth a call.

Why not just get some band on downtube shifters? Plenty of options out there.

How about a second hand frame, and a respray? There must be a lot of bikes with that spec out there. I was tempted by a beautiful Principia at a local bike jumble a couple of years back that would have fitted your description. But N had to equal N at the time.

Many will scoff but you have the ideal candidate in the Planet X Pro Carbon

Downtube cable bosses and 68mm BSA threaded BB

Should easily take 28mm tyres. I'm running 28mm Michelin Pro4 Endurance on my PX Pro Carbon and on my Archetype rims they come up nearer 30mm. Other brands of 28mm tyres are probably smaller

Don't think the OP is referring to the sort of thing seen on that Planet X frame-they are not down tube bosses-they are just mounts for barrel adjusters.

Op presumably means bosses for mounting down tube shift levers.

    Why?

it you don't like STIs / Ergos then you could use bar end shifters as an alternative. That opens up frame options a lot.

Or you need to go for Old Stock frames from about 1994: Just after 8 speed came in (so 130mm rear spacing) as they often came with downtube bosses with adapters.

I reckon a decent steel frame with carbon fork would be your best bet. As mentioned SPA:

    Or the steel houses.
