Rear Mech Size

So, I have totalled my rear mech today and need to replace it. However I do not know what size to buy out of a medium or long cage version.
I am running a xt 2 x 11 set up if that helps. Think its a long cage but do not want to buy one and then have to send it back and reorder the right one. Rear cassette is a 11-40T.
Any help would be great.

    It doesn't really matter if you go too long, it will just weigh more. For a 2x11 with 11-40, I'd probably go long cage, especially if it's on a full sus.

    Compare the stated capacity on the Shimano tech docs with the capacity you need!
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
