Wobbling cassette

Hello,

I'm having some trouble with my 2016 Specialized Sirrus.

I noticed some noises and difficulty when shifting to higher gears which even after professional maintenance were not fixed. Also when paying close attention i saw the cassette wobbling as the wheel spinned. I removed the rear quick release axle and repeated spinning the wheel and the wobble was still happening, so the axle which looks very straight must be good.

Here are two test videos, one of the wobbling and another of shifting all the gears up and down on the cassette. On both tests was set on the big gear in the front.

Any ideas?

Lots of cassettes wobble slightly. It's pretty normal.

When you are in these small sprockets - is the chain and the mech lining up perfectly beneath each cog ? If it isnt adjust it using the cable tensioner.
  • That's nothing to worry about - quite normal and acceptable.

    Thank you for answering!

Fenix, the chain, mech and each cog are perfectly beneath each other but it can take some time more than usual for the chain to shift into the small sprockets. So you think it has to do with the cassette alone but it's normal?

If its struggling to get into the small sprocket I'd maybe give it a half turn to take the jockey wheels over to the cog that they are trying to recach. If it improves great. If not - turn it back.

Can't see the videos as at work, but I had similar sounding issues after my first try at cassette maintenance. For me, it turned out I hadn't tightened the cassette lockring enough - also missed by a LBS technician. May not be at all relevant, but quick and easy to check/fix.

The cassette lock ring is easy to misalign and crossthread. I've found that the last cog is also easy to misalign so it doesn't sit on the freehub properly which makes the lock ring crossthread.

Make sure the last cog is sitting on the freehub properly, with the large "tooth" in the large notch first, then thread the lock ring carefully. If you are like me, it might take six or seven goes to thread it properly. Spin the cassette before you tighten the ring fully to check for the wobble.

I have a freehub socket with a central skewer to help with alignment.
