Hello everyone,

I just joined the cycling world last week, got an used Defy 1 disc 2016, I am thinking about upgrading my pedal (the previous owner installed one for mountain bike). Please recommend a few entry level road bike pedal for me, thanks!!!

I can't recommend any road pedals as I've never used them/ even though I own only road bikes! Plenty of people use mountain bike pedals for road use and they work just fine- the shoes also allow you to walk a little easier too. Might be worth holding on to your current pedals before upgrading.
  • The problem i am having right now is that it is very difficult to pedal those mountain bike pedal on regular shoes... So i am thinking either to get a flat pedal or go for a road pedal and get proper shoes for it.

I would suggest you either buy Shimano 105 5800 pedals and some proper shoes. Or you could get some touring pedals like A600 or A520 SPDs which have the same cleats as mountain bike pedals if you want to walk around normally.
http://bike.shimano.com/content/sac-bik ... edals.html. There are other brands other than Shimano but they are usually more Marmite with loads of fanboys and haters.

Another thing you could do is just get a pair of 5/10 mountain bike shoes http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/cn/e ... prod121642 and some plastic flat pedals with long pins, such as Nukeproof Neutrons http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/cn/e ... prod122950 which are ideal around town and really lose you practically no time vs clipping in, also you don't need to screw around with cleat positioning and can keep better bloodflow as you can move your feet around more.

Basically if you are going to wear lycra and race in Sportives and Crits, ride 100 miles or more, join a club and test yourself on Strava Segments get Shimano SPD-SL. If you are going to try the road biking thing and also may want to commute and be practical get Shimano SPD touring or flat pedals.

If you are just starting out I reckon the A520 pedals are ideal - flat pedal with grip on one face and spd clip in on the other face. Leaves you with loads of footwear options.

  • Wiggle have a one side flat one side spd pedals in their lifeline range, I have them on one bike and they are just as good as the similar shimano options but around £10 cheaper.
