Hello all,

Was wondering if I could solicit advice regarding a vintage ride? 1987 Cannondale SR500, with Biopace chain ring.

I would like to change out the brake heads for Dura Ace 7700 dual pivots, and the Biopace to something comparable.

Due to the tight spacing in the rear I know I am limited to a 6 speed. I would like also like to go to Aero bars and bar end shifters and away from down tube shifters.

Cheers, and many thanks.

D

A vintage bike is a vintage bike. You have two options. Accept its perceived limitations or sell it and buy a modern bike . Anything else will not have a positive outcome.

Really? Retromod is a thing, you know. 126mm rear OLD is a limitation (although I'd be surprised if a 1987 frame wasn't 130mm) but otherwise you can happily fit a modern groupset and wheels. I have 8sp Record and a sneaky compact on my Vitus 979.

If it's a steel frame you can do a 'cold setting' of the rear triangle to increase spacing from 126mm to 130mm. That will let you run up to 11 speed if you wanted to. I did this on a steel Dolan bike I built recently. More on this here- http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html

Also, 7700 calipers use recessed nuts so you may need to drill the brake bridges in order to fit them.

In terms of aero bars (or STI shifters) you just need to remove the downtube shifters and replace them with cable stops. I used these- https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/gear-spares ... -per-pair/
