9 Speed only Freehub

I'm looking at a wheel being sold second hand just now, the seller is listing it as having a 9 speed only freehub and stating that 10 speed won't fit. I thought any hub that took 9 speed would take 10 speed with a spacer (since 10 speed overall spacing is actually narrower than 9 speed). Am I wrong? Is there a rare variety of 9 speed freehub that will not take a 10 speed cassette?

    I think you are correct. I have never come across or heard of a 9 speed only freehub in Shimano or Campag.However it would not be the first time I have been wrong.

    Never heard of a 9 speed only freehub.

    Shimano briefly made some 10 speed only aluminium freehubs with taller splines which wouldn't take 8/9 speed cassettes. This from Sheldon:

    "Dura-Ace 7800 and 7801 10-speed hubs (and Ultegra wheelsets) with the aluminum Freehub body and tall splines accept only Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105 10-speed cassettes"

    Ok, thanks, that was my thinking. Might take a punt, if it all goes horribly wrong I might be able to swap the freehub out anyway.

    In the early days of 9 speed, freehubs were listed as 9 speed, but all of them take at least 10 speed as well...

    In terms of 'only' they would also take 8 speed and 7 with a spacer, OK not many people will go that route but the ONLY is clearly uninformed/BS.
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
