Hope someone can help! I am upgrading my Specialised SL4 and have fitted new Front and Read Shimano 6700 derailleurs and also new cables.

All now fitted but cant quite get it right, issue i am having are:

On the front, the chain will only go into the smallest ring, when trying to shift it wont go

On the rear, the chain will only go onto the smallest 4 cogs, but cant shift past this, also jumps gears sporadically

Tried indexing to no luck - any suggestions would be hugely appreciated

Thanks in advance!

Front derailleur problems:- sounds like it could be one of two issues or a combination of both. Firstly derailleur height - are you sure the derailleur is set high enough. If it's too low then the cage will not have enough space to move the chain onto the big ring.
Secondly, cable tension. - do you have enough tension in the FD cable. It's usually not possible to get sufficient tension on the FD cable by just pulling it manually before attaching the fixing bolt. You really need a barrel adjuster to get enough tension. I suspect your SL4 has internal cabling so you may need to fit an inline barrel adjuster for the FD.
Final thought - are you sure that the cable is fully seated in the shifter. Sometimes the cable end nipple needs a bit of persuasion to seat properly.

Rear derailleur problems.- Are you sure that the shifter was clicked fully to the highest gear (smallest cog) position before you attached the inner cable to the rear derailleur fixing bolt to carry out your indexing. Other thoughts relate to the setting of the low limit - has that been done correctly. If not it could stop the chain shifting across to the lower gears (larger sprockets.

How did you do your indexing:- this video is one of the best out there

Also check the position of the limit screws. These if incorrect will stop proper movement. Best to read the instructions on the shimano website and also there are various youtube videos showing how to fit and setup everything.

I did the same recently and found at various times you need three hands so got the wife to "volunteer" .

Thanks both for the advice - managed to get the rear shifting through perfectly. The front I have had no luck with. Ive readjusted the height and tightened as far as possible and used the barrel adjuster also, still stuck in smaller ring. Ive adjusted screw to align and still no joy - causing a major headache!

If you have another bike, take a look at how the cable goes into the front derailleur and make sure you have it at the right angle on your SL4.

It seems that there is a problem with the low and high endpoinds adjustment bolts. from what I can tell you have to visit a specialist shop.

These are the instructions I use which I found online somewhere and have tweaked a little. Dead easy and the best front shifting I have had with that generation of groupset.

Undo the cable. Wind in the barrel adjust all the way.

When clamping the front derailleur to the frame make sure the gap between the big chainring teeth and front derailleur cage is 2-5mm.

First, with the cable still unattached. Put the chain on the small front ring and biggest back cog. Make sure to click the front downshift lever into its lowest position at his point.

Adjust the inner limit screw (closest to the frame on the front derailleur) so the gap between the inner edge of the derailleur and the chain is 1mm.

Clamp the cable (finger tight cable tension - not too much). Then shift the chain onto the smallest cog at the back, and shift the front onto the big ring. There should now be some chain rubbing on the cage if you spin the cranks.

Then wind the inline barrel adjuster (adding more cable tension) until there is a 1mm gap between the outer cage and chain, and no chain rub. Look down at the front derailleur cage as you do it.

Then wind the outer limit screw in until it just touches the stop. (start off with the outer limit screwed out, if it's screwed in too much it wont shift up)

Now shift the chain onto the small front ring, and the rear onto the second to last smallest cog. Then click into the front small ring trim position. Now whilst in the trim position - add more tension again with the barrel adjuster until there is no rub. Leave a gap of 2mm from the chain and the outer cage. This will eliminate any slop in the trim position and make it feel more positive.

Done. There will always be some rub in the small/small combo but I find that works really well.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

........When the gear cable comes down the down tube and around the bottom bracket housing, it then goes up through the frame and onto the front derailleur. Mostly there is a small bore outher cable which is about 75mm long. does anyone know where I can get this ?
  • I also have a Spesh / Ultegra 11 speed and problems with excessive front derailleur chain rub on small front/ large back (lowest gear).
Both limit screws are set correctly. Slackening the barrel adjuster reduces or eliminates low gear chain rub but in this setting, there is insufficient cable tension to mount the large chainring.
Adding more tension enables a crisp shift to large ring but leaves me with noisy chain rub on small chainring. It is almost as if the gear change lever doesn't move as much cable as it should. If your limit screws are set correctly I would have thought it should be able to shift the FD the full distance between limits. Worn shifter?
