Front hub play

Hi,
I have a selcof front hub on some Planet X Carbon wheels.
There is some play in the front hub which i initially thought was the cartridge bearings. However, I tried tapping the end caps with a rubber mallet and this seems to temporarily cure the play in the hub.
The end caps feel loose, could these need replacing?

I think it's more likely that the bearings have developed excessive thrust movement, or they are improperly seated?0
