Disc brakes - what is the bit of packing they put in between the pads?

Evening all,

am considering trying my Synapse disc on the turbo, and as the rotor will no longer be in attendance, wondered whether it would be advisable to wedge something, hopefully custom made, in between the pads in case I, or anyone, should accidentally pull the lever - also be good for then transporting the bike in the car with the front wheel off.

Is there a technical name for this part, so I can see if I can buy a couple?

Or do I need to go and speak nicely to my LBS?

I've just found this, as an example:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/hayes-plastic-pad-spacer-stroker-g2/rp-prod20019?gs=1&utm_source=google&utm_term=&utm_campaign=Chain%20Reaction-UK-PLA-PLA-All-DT-SE-Shopping%20QLB%20Generic%20Desktop&utm_medium=base&utm_content=mkwid%7Cs016PyPZv_dc%7Cpcrid%7C161850070953%7Cpkw%7C%7Cpmt%7C%7Cprd%7C62690UK

Would the size of spacer be the same irrespective of whether it is SRAM, Hayes or Shimano, or are they likely to differ?

Whilst I am on the subject, a google turned this up, which I am aware is NOT what I am after above, BUT am intrigued as to what it does, and how it works, as my SRAM setup invariably has a bit of rub on the rotor now and then.
