What bike would you buy

Had been a runner for 20 years. Used a commuter bike that time. Rediscovered road biking last year. Trading in my running shoes for a mountain bike to use once a week or so. Some single track but more just to have fun and explore the mountains.

Kona Honzo 29

Giant Fathom - pimped out by some mountain bikers in the shop to show customers the possibilities and what they would they do if they owned that bike - shorter stem, carbon and wider handle bars, etc.

Both will work out to about the same price.

Or given my abilities or lack thereof and ambitions, does it matter?

And also consider the Voodoo Bizango from Halfords. Also consider changing to a 1*10 gearing.

It is not all about the bike though. If you have been (and possibly still are) a runner then you may find that once a week develops in to a daily passion and investing in skills in maintenance, possible upgrades to the bike and maybe some clothing should be factored in but in any event welcome!
...take your pickelf on your holibobs.... :D
