With your budget and requirements, why not consider a build?

Looks like my hand has been forced.... Genesis say the CDF30 is not due to land until end of May. So if I want to get on this bike sooner I'm gonna have to get something built up. So stock wheels aren't going to be a worry.

I've decided to stick with steel. A couple extra kilo's is nothing and I'll be losing more off the belly anyway.

The safest bet would certainly be to get some handbuilts, say Archetype rims with 36 spoke rear and 32 spoke front, but given the limited resale value of bike wheels you might be just as well giving the stock wheels a go first.

Thanks for the tip on the rims. I'll take a look at the archetypes think I've seen that name a few times in discussions with heavyweights![/quote]

Just to add to that, the Archetype is not a disc specific rim so it has a brake track. You can use those rims for a disc build but you may wish to consider instead H Plus Son's Hydra rim which is basically the disc specific version of the Archetype.

Your best bet however is to email a couple of wheelbuilders directly with your details and budget and they will provide you with some suggested builds. I can recommend the Cycle clinic and DCR wheels.

If you go down the frame build-up route then consider Paul Milnes as a source. They advertise widely on Ebay but they are a pukka bike shop who often acquire complete bikes and strip them down to sell of the components separately. I've bought 2 frames from them in the past and can't fault them. Also if you call them direct they will often discount the Ebay price to reflect the savings on Ebay charges - or they will throw in some extras such as BB's or headset bearings.

They have this on offer through Ebay

but if you don't like that colour - their website is offering this

Regarding wheelsets I would echo MrB 123's recommendations and go with the disc specific H Plus Son Hydra.

Malcolm at Cycle Clinic will build you a set of 32 spoke wheels for £477

    Add in a 105 5800 groupset for £350

plus other finishing kit for another say £300 and you have your ideal bike around £1500

Don't forget he needs disc brakes though. They could be bought separately to the 105 groupset but AFAIK you're currently looking at around £400 for shifters and calipers. He'd make a bit back by selling off the 105 shifters and calipers, but I reckon it would be better value to buy a full Ultegra hydro groupset, currently available around £700, eg

Yeah - realised my mistake shortly after posting but was otherwise occupied so could not get back to edit until now.

That Ultegra hydro groupset from Merlin looks like a steal at that price

So turns out I live really close to a Genesis dealer who are really into the brand, their Instagram is full of Genesis custom builds. Got onto them straight away and they are keen to help me out. Even got an e-mail back from them at 10:30pm last night!

They are gonna source a frame for me. Gonna talk over some wheel options tommorow. Two of the guys in the shop have some nicely built CDF's so will take a look at what's possible. I know I won't be getting internet prices but I like the support you get from a decent LBS.

Looking at the price seems Ultegra is the no brainer.
