Wilier Xoard XP - Chainstay Crack - advice please

I have had my Wilier Xoard Xp since 2011 from new - absolutely loved it.

Its been my winter ride for last couple of years but kept in great condidition with regular services and just had a whole new campy veloce group set put on.

I was out this morning and on a decent and felt the back wheel wobble massively, so much so that I thought I was comimg off. Managed to stop thinking that the real wheel was loose.

On closer inspection however I found a circluar crack / more a complete break at the end of the Chainstay, where it meets the rear derailer hangers. So its virtually sheered off and all that is is holding the frame together is internal struts? The frame is full carbon.

So after 6 years it looks knackered / broken. Im gutted.

Looking online it looks like Wilier only offer 5 years warrenty, which considering their marketing and brand hertiage sounds unfair. It was a 2k bike and I don't expect to have had such a massive break after a reletively short period.

I wondered if anyone has had an issues with the Izoard XP from 2010/11 or knows what the UK distributor (who I will be contacting in the morning) or Wilier may have to say on this issue?

any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I think you meant dropout not derailleur hanger!

Not sure what Internal struts, the frame is what hold it together so you have the stays the other side plus seat stay that side.

I'd contact Willier and express your disappointment (emphasis how much you loved it and how good it was but not sure if you want to keep having to get a new frame sort of thing) and see if you can get a goodwill out of them.

The sales of goods act requires an item to last as long as can reasonably be expected and I'd say at 6 years any claim against the bike shop is going to be an uphill struggle, although 6 years has previously been held to be reasonable for other items.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • You can probably get it repaired for £100 or so if all else fails.
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

^ This. There are a few carbon repair specialists with good reputations who can likely fix it for you - assuming Wilier and/or the dealer you bought it from don't come up with a solution. To be fair though after 6 years of use I'd have thought that their liability was minimal.

Many thanks for advice - Im not sure I would have complete confidence in any repaired frame TBH.

I have spoken to the LBS where I bought it and they are going to take in frame and speak to Wilier. I don't think I have much chance of a new frame and I dont really see value in a repair, so I may walk away.

Quite a lot of carbon frames have a metal V section on either side of the chain stays for the rear dropouts - the front forks also have a similar insert albeit not a V.

I also have an Izoard XP and love it.

The only experience I have with Wilier customer service is via my mate who bought a Wilier GT. He noticed what turned out to be a purely cosmetic defect on the frame a couple of days later and took it back to the LBS where he bought it. The LBS contacted WIlier and they were more than generous in what they offered him by way of compensation so I would recommend at least a word with them - what have you got to loose?

The shop you bought from will have more clout than you as they obviously buy more Wiliers than you do so I would say go through them if you can.
