I've noticed a bit of play in the left pedal when putting the power down. Have nipped them up to make sure they hadn't worked loose, but can detect play by hand too.

Once there's play does that mean game over?

Is the play in the bearings, or between cleat and pedal?

Bearings (I think). Whole pedal will wobble (up and down, not sideways) if you jiggle it.

The bearing housing of these pedals screws to the main body with quite a narrow contact. So the pedal body does flex on the axle a little. It shouldn't move up and down though. I would take the bearing housing out of the pedal and inspect it for knackered-ness.

What you need is this tool -Shimano TL-PD40 (about £2) . It allows you to unscrew the axle from the pedal body. Once opened, you'll find 2 nuts on the end of the axle. These need adjusting to take the play out of the bearings. Don't tighten them too much or the pedal won't spin. On the outer of the 2 nuts (the lock nut) use loctite to ensure it doesn't loosen. Put fresh grease inside the pedal body, install axle, when tightened the old grease is forced out past the seal.
