Anyone know what the little removable rubber circle is for on road shoe cleats (look ones)

Just curious!

My Ergo 2's have a small screw which can be used to align the cleat to ensure a replacement it placed in the same position, the pop-out rubber covers the hole that gives access to the screw.

As Joe said, my Sidi shoes have a small threaded insert that a plastic locator is screwed down with. The cleat is then fitted minus the rubber centre bit and when the cleat is aligned and tightened you tighten the screw and then fit the cover
My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...

I just draw around the old cleat in Sharpie before changing them over and place new cleat within the outline for a perfect match.
