Road cassette on a MTB

Hi All.
My 12 year old is racing DH this year on a 2012 Nukeproof Mega AM Pro, talking with a fella yesterday who has done rather well in the DH scene, he looked at the bike and said you need to get that 11-36 cassette off the bike and put a 11-25 on it instead, explaining that we didn't need climbing gears and of course would shave some weight off the bike ( mind only around 200 grams )
would I be right in thinking the mech should line up as they would both be 10 speed cassettes, I take it I would I need to adjust the B screw and shorten the chain ?
Also is this worth doing ?

that rather depends on how He/She is riding? i.e. are they riding the full range of the cassette, and do they notice the gaps in the cogs? MTB vs Road cassette at is 2vs 1 tooth difference.0 -
Most DH racers use road cassettes. You only need a very narrow range of gears and want the close ratios for acceleration of the line. If you run a 11-36 cassette only half the cassette is any use.
It should all line up but you'll probably want to shorten the chain and you might want a short cage cassette. A chain device will also be useful.
If you can, get rid of the air shock as well. Coil shocks work much better for downhill racing and will give a useful amount of increased grip and control when you're smashing the rocks & roots.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Hi All.
Thank you for the replies, I have got a Med cage clutch XT mech and a Zee mech in the spares kit, the front cog is a NW 34 tooth.
Planning on the coil spring shock just need to get the pennies together, I've been recommended to get a Fox Van R would this be the shock of choice or are there any others worth a look ( 200mm x 57mm)0
