Hi all.

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience on replacing the bearings on an old Superstar Components Superleggera rear hub.

I have pulled the freehub off and removed the outboard bearing but the inboard bearing by the engagement pawls is being a right sod. It cant be knocked out through the hub, and is held in place by the part that has the engagement pawls on the other side. From what I have read it requires a special tool. In what way is it special does any one know. I have tried undoing it (after sorting out a way to actual undo the damn thing) but have no idea which way to turn it. I have tried both ways but for all I know I could have tightened the thing up !

I have tried getting in touch with Superstar Components via email but had no reply in over two days now :-( And so far have not received an answer on the phone.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Richard.

I've replaced all the rear bearings in a Superleggera of 2009 vintage

I recall it was a fiddle to get onto the back of one of the hub bearings but knocked it out with a screwdriver and hammer, it was about 5 years ago but I think for the one you have to go across at an angle to get to the back of it. Of course mine may not be from the affected year.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    Thanks guys for the info.

Yeah, binning it is the way to do it, simple but the way to go.

Got a reply back from SuperStar who no longer service that hub or have the tool to do it.

I eventually managed to get the engagement part of the hub off after heating it up while holding it in a vice and then using a chainwhip (after placing the sprokets back on) and then with a few tugs it gave way and unscrewed.

The bearing though is another matter and is jammed in. And with no tool to remove it I am calling it a day.

I did try to weaken the side of the bearing (as it had failed and the inner part and balls fell out) using a grinding stone and then heating it up again but with no success :-(

Superstar did give me a link to a possible freehub which I have ordered and will try. If it works I will leave a reply here for future reference.

The link to the part -

I will eventually save up for a new whelel or bike though. Time to move on from 26" and the old QR and a hub which is almost unserviceable !

Have the wheel relaced with a shimano deore hub the cost should be that much to be honest. I'm still using 26" but have hope hubs that are easy to service.

The part from the link i gave above is a direct replacement for the now dated supperleggera freehub and works a treat.

The new part also has a different design for housing the bearings using two of the bigger bearings that are found in the old superleggera hub which should give an extend lifespan in addition to allowing the bearings to be easily replaced in the future until a new wheel / hub is purchased.

Hope this helps anyone still using this old hub and thanks to all for the help and information.

I’m having issues with mine now, that link doesn’t seem to work anymore, do you have a part number or anything to point me in the right direction?
