Do you have separate bikes for commuting / touring & exercise?

I have 3 at the moment which is the fewest I've had for 15 years. One commuter (Croix de Fer), one road (Cervelo S3) and one MTB (Santa Cruz 5010). I think I'm happy with that - I used to double up on bikes so a quick hack off-road was on the cheap(ish) hardtail and save the full-sus for weekends but I reckon I probably road my Sunday best MTB about 5 times a year as a result

    2016 Santa Cruz 5010
    2016 Genesis Croix de Fer

I'm a bit more diligent about cleaning my bike than most though - gets cleaned at least every Sunday, and if it's been filthy weather I'll give it a quick wipe/wash as soon as I get in.

Goodness me! I have NEVER cleaned my regular commuting bikes (the Carlton and the Dawes), with the exception of the drivetrain. You know a bike's dirty when there's more build up of brake pad material stuck to the front forks than is left on the brake pads themselves. You'd never know the back wheel on the Carlton has a polished alloy rim, given that with the grime build up it's the same colour as the dark anodised front one.
I just can't do it. If my bike's dirty I feel dirty. Even if I had an absolute chopabout, I'd still keep it clean(ish). It doesn't hurt that I'm one of those weird people that actually LIKES cleaning my bike...
Fat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.
Specialising in Git Daaahns and Cafs. Norvern Munkey/Transplanted Laaandoner.

Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

Most of my cycling time is spent community, so I want to spend it on the best bike I have (which is currently the Specialised Roubaix). One day I will get something even faster/lighter and I will commute on that too, but then I do have 2 sets of wheels for different occasions and my mud guards are quick to take off.

But in the OP case, what you essentially have their is a van, so it makes sense for you to have a car as well.
  • Best road bike (carbon, no mudguards)
    Light tourer (steel, mudguards, rack)
    Folder (Brompton)
Fixie (old steel frame converted - never used since I moved somewhere hilly)
Old MTB (for kicking around town)
Even older MTB (in bits at the moment, awaiting respray)

And Cycle 2 Work window has just opened at work. Do I need a decent new MTB? No, I don't NEED one but ...
Never be tempted to race against a Barclays Cycle Hire bike. If you do, there are only two outcomes. Of these, by far the better is that you now have the scalp of a Boris Bike.

    I have 3......

Custom Steel made by Tom Donhou, my best bike and tend to take it for a spin at weekends when it is dry

Refurbished 1978 Motobecane, was my training bike in the late 80's. Dug it out of my mum's garage and brought it back to life a couple of years ago. Use it on the turbo and for the odd spin to the pub

Cannondale CAADX, bought in October for my daily commute.

My firms Cycle2work window also opened up. Looking to replace aging ali mtb with new hybrid to also act as a backup for the work bike (cyclocross bike).
