Bargain bike....or not?

I've just been to Cycle Surgey where I found the last in my size Orbea Avante M650SE 2016 ( exclusive model to CS).

It's a full carbon bike with Tiagra 4700 groupset (excluding breaks -Orbea own) and Shimano R500 wheels.

Reduced to sub £600.

Now I know it's not a top end bike but it seems to good to be true at that money (I know the old adage if it's too good to be true then it probably is) full carbon and an entry level groupset. Seems very good value compared to my previous choice of a Cube Attain SL.

Is the Orbea a 'bette' bike than the Cube ( 105 and aluminium).

Now I could stretch to a Cannondale Caad12 105 but is it worth it over the Orbea (or Cube)?

My riding will be Sunday outings etc, currently I'm off road on an Orange Four, but want to do some road stuff up to 100 milers max distance - most shorter.

Sounds like a decent deal, Orbeas are good bikes.

Tiagra 4700 has a good reputation, i wouldnt be put off with it being "only" 10 speed compared to 105 if the price is right.

Seems like a good idea. I would always focus on the frame.
Components will need to be replaced as they wear and can be upgraded at that time.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

  • Just looked at that as you put m650 se, wanted to make sure it wasn't some weird model with 650 wheels, it's actually the m60se. Looks great value to me, carbon frame, forgiving geometry and the new Tiagra is just really good. If it's your size I'd go for it.
  • I ride an Orbea (Orca not Avant) and am very pleased with it, wish I had got it for £600 mind!!

    Top Tube (EFF) 548.1mm

Sounds like that would fit me.
  • The CS website has this at £650, so if you can get it for sub £600, then go for it, it's a bargain. As has been said, you can always upgrade as and when you want (starting with wider tyres I'd say). The RRP is £1200, so it's effectively half price or under.
The CAAD12 is allegedly a great alloy bike (perhaps one of the best alu frames around), according to all reviews and in the opinion of many here, but I think the geometry may be less 'Sportivey' if you know what I mean, so it depends if that's an issue for you. I don't think you'd be disappointed with either.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I've bought a Cube Attain after trying a friends - seems to tick all the boxes for a first road bike for me.
