Bit of advice required about which hubs to go for.

On the bird aeris build the wheel set and hubs are DT Swiss E1900 are standard shimano free hub but for another £200 I can upgrade to hope pro 4 hubs with DT Swiss M502 rims.

I am a heavy rider and from what I have read the upgrade will be better but will be worth to £200 for a novice biker.

Cheers

You pays your money and takes your choice, the DT Swiss hubs are perfectly competent.

That said there are a lot of proprietary parts on the wheels making any maintenance more costly and they also have conventionally pawls for the freewheel not the better DT Swiss 'ratchet' system. Neither issue impacts the Hope/DT combo/
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

you can overthink this. Both DT Swiss and hope hubs are reliable and both have spares that you can buy. one is not better than the other one is different. hubs dont make you ride quicker but some hubs give more issue with maintenance than others. For some OEM hubs the freehubs are not even available so then your stuck.

You will find that the bearings (ball races) are the same in many of the decent hubs. You can usually replace these for half the price of the original hub manufacturer's parts and a specialist bearing supplier. These will not be cheap copies but pukka SKF, Timken is similar units. The sizes are pretty standard. The same applies to bottom bracket and pivot bearings.
