2006 Cannondale Synapse 3 Buying Advice

So I'm currently in the market for a road bike. As a new rider I was looking to buy one used. I found a 2006 Cannondale Synapse Carbon 3 on eBay for $500. However, it may need a new groupset. Should I go for it? And if not, any suggestions on buying used bikes? Just as a reference point my max budget for a used bike is around $500.
