I would love to hear people's thoughts on my bike upgrade.
I have a budget of £1500 to spend and currently I am divided on which to choose.
These are my requirements for my new purchase

Hydraulic disk brakes (I love them on my mountain bike)
32t rear cassette (I currently have a 30 with a 50/34 chainset, and occasionally on extremely steep climbs my weak legs are begging for another gear or two)
Under 10kg or as low as possible for this price range
Decent looking
Something that will soak up the bumps of my local roads
I will be riding 100km sportives later this year
Other than that, I will be riding about 100km per week for fun and fitness (no commuting)

I don't want to be changing any parts other than my saddle. I need it ready to roll. :D
These are the two bikes that have caught my eye....

Currently I am favouring the giant because I think the carbon frame may take up some of the chatter?
But I'm unsure of the Tiagra gearing. Currently I own a budget carbon bike, but this had 10 speed ultegra. So it may be a step down.
On the Trek, its an aluminium frame, but this has 105's
Which is best? 700x32 tyres on the trek or 700x25 on the giant? Seems a big difference???
What difference would these make to the ride in general? Last year I was riding with 700x28c

Does anyone have any idea how these bikes would compare in terms of speed, climbing and fun in general?
Which to choose? Or is there other options I may have missed bearing in mind that I would prefer to buy from a local shop?
Any thoughts and opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ps. I may be able to stretch to the Giant defy 2 @£1700 if I sell some body parts  or clear out the attic :o

Just spotted this one.....
Now I'm confused on what to choose

2016 bikes are heavily discounted and tbh there is not a significant difference between spec. between 2016 and 2017 - unless there is a change in the model frame. This below is a better spec. than the Trek and Giant you have linked to:

Echo this, both the giant and advance and Trek ALR were on my short list. In the end I picked up a 2016 Giant Defy Advanced Pro 2 for the price of the Trek. Very comfortable bike, but with plenty of zip.
  • Thanks for the replies and advice.
It looks like the 2016 models are the way to go
I'm just curious to know what people of the Cube bike that I listed

Well the Trek Domane ALR is a new frame. The ALR5 is the successor to the 2.3

I would buy the ALR5. Well, actually I have just bought the ALR5. I chose it because of its wider clearance. I've got 30mm tires but there's room for even wider. As far as I know the Defy can hold max. 28mm.
