Campagnolo Veloce 10 speed shifters with an otherwise Shimano 8 speed groupset

My winter bike is full Claris, the main thing I don't like about it is the shifters with the gear cables sticking out the side. It looks messy and gets in the way of lights etc. mounted on the bars.
I've read in a couple of places that Campagnolo 10 speed shifters actually work with Shimano 8 speed derailleurs. I was thinking of buying these shifters: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/camp ... prod127500
It would be a lot cheaper than changing the entire groupset.

Has anyone successfully used this combination? I also have Tektro brakes, hopefully I would not need to change the brake callipers to Campy as well? Would it require Campagnolo or Shimano cables?

Yes, both Shimano 8 and Campagnolo 10 have the same pull of 2.8 mm, so it should work flawlessly. You will need Campagnolo cables (both gear and brake), typically they come with the shifters

Thanks, I think I will fit this then. Should make a nice upgrade to the Claris shifters which don't feel all too great as well - left shifter especially feels very mechanical and clunky.
Do you have any idea of Campagnolo shifters will give adequate braking performance with Tektro brakes (well, as adequate as Tektro can ever be )I don't think I can put Campagnolo brake callipers as I need long reach brakes for the Synapse frame.

Yes , Campagnolo 10 speed shifters do work with 8 speed Shimano drivetrains.
Don't know about the brakes...
The Veloce Ergopowers are not very durable , after a few years they tend to wear out.
Pair of older models (pre 2007 ) would be my choice.

Campagnolo levers have slightly longer lever throw per equal movement, which means you might have to put the pads slightly closer to the rims... we are talking half a millimeter here, nothing major.
My view is that brake levers are just actuators, they all do the same job... if Shimano ones work, then Campagnolo ones will work too

As above, the older 10 speed levers (mach 2 design) are way better than the more recent ones, might be worth comparing CRC price with what you can get on ebay second hand/NOS... 10 speed Chorus or Record would be the golden ticket

For instance, it seems silly to spend more for second hand, but these are miles better than the CRC ones (although you have no warranty on them)

Unfortunately, used 10 speed Chorus/Record shifters are over twice the price of new Veloce shifters. I think I'd rather buy the Veloce brand new and it would still be cheaper to replace once if necessary!
Although I didn't see those ones for £100 . might make him an offer on those if they're really that much better, although the black ones do fit better with the rest of the bike. Nothing is silver.

The advantage is that you buy them now for 100 and you sell them in two years time for 100... they are very desirable, whereas the newer ones lose value quickly, as people know they cannot be repaired

On the other hand, the CRC ones come with warranty and all...

The other advantage is functional - the old levers give you multiple downshift which is nice.

Veloce levers and Tektro calipers work fine. I have that combo on my winter bike. Another point is that if you have 25/28 tyres on narrow rims you have two means of releasing the brake to remove the wheel.

They are better than the modern ones. Centaur is one notch up compared to Veloce
