Wheel choice - 650b & 135mmQR frame

Hi,

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I did search the forum and never found anything conclusive...

I have an On-One 45650b frame which I'm building up, and since looking at the possible wheel options I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed as the frame has the 'old style' 135mm QR fixed rear dropouts and as such I presume is not adaptable (like newer Trek ABP frames etc).

I know there are kits to convert 135mm based wheels to 142mm axles, so is this all I need to consider when choosing a wheel? i.e. buy a 142mm axle based wheel and get a 135mm conversion kit?

Or am I missing something??

Thank you,

Mike

depends on the hub - quite a lot of new hubs can be converted to various axle sizes but not all. Some have end caps others need an axle change

Some 142 hubs can't be adapted down to 135 as they are too wide, so you need to be sure whatever you get can be, or why not just buy a 135mm wheel?
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Ah... See that's what I was thinking... although how would I identify that a certain wheel has a wider hub? Or should I simply go for a wheel that is 135mm QR (more choice at the moment, but reducing over time I guess)? :?

most new hubs (not cheap crap) will convert so just find ones that do.

There are plenty of decent QR wheels. Why faff?

If the hub/wheel is sold with 135 converters (or they are available) then it can be made 135, if not, it can't, not too had to figure.

But again, why bother, just get a 135 wheel.

Look at hope pro 2 evo these I believe are 135 in QR but with end caps to 142mm x12 etc.

I would spend the extra and get a decent convertible hub so you can transfer to other bikes in future.

From searching wheelsets on ebay etc I think this is the best approach. Thanks for all the help :)

    Hi,

Would a wheel with a 140mm hub (measured by seller) be suitable for the rear dropouts of my frame? I measured my frame and it's 137mm between the inner edges of the rear dropouts, so could it be that my frame has bent in slightly - or maybe seller has mis-measured his hub?

Reason I ask is that there's a set of WTB ST i23's for sale locally to me. They have formula 180mm rotors, Conti X-king tyres, but unknown silver coloured hubs and spokes. The seller said the wheels were taken off his 2014 GT Sensor.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Not if you say your frame is 135mm QR.
  • My DT Swiss wheels (XM 1501 650b) came with the hubs setup as thru axle front and rear, but also included the endcaps and quick releases to convert them to quick release wheels (135mm rear / 100mm front).

    Thanks, I'll check them out.
