BB30 to BB86 Pressfit?

Hi all,

Been trying to look around for an answer to my question but there is so much info it's confusing me a bit.

I have an SuperSix Evo with BB30.
I'm changing frame to an Giant TCR but keeping the groupset (SRAM red) so need to know if I can use existing stuff on the new bike.
The chainset is a FSA with Cannondale Si cranks.

Can I get an adaptor to fit the Giant or will I have to replace the whole lot? I would ideally like to keep everything I have, at least the FSA.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

  • If it's a 30mm axle can you not use something like this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/fsa-bb86-bearing-kit-alloy-cranks/

  • BB86 still uses a 24mm crank spindle, you can get convertors but I have no experience of them, and there are limits to crank spindle lengths.

You can use either 24mm or 30mm spindles with a BB86 as long as you fit the right bearings.
Rotor sell bearings for BB86 for both 24mm and 30mm spindles.

PF4130 is for 30mm spindles and PF4124 is for 24mm spindles.

  • Ok cool Cheers peeps.
The BB is bb30a apparently on the Evo.

Will the crank spindle be long enough for a wider bottom bracket though?

I have a brand new Rotor PF 41/30mm BB86 converter going cheap...

The BB86 bottom bracket shell is 86.5mm wide and according to Cannondale the BB30a is 73mm, so it may not fit after all.

I think this is the crux of the issue; you can definitely get BBs that allow you to fit a 30 mm axle into a BB86 shell, but the spindle length on your crankset is the determining factor as to whether your existing cranks will fit.
  • Its my understanding that the crank spindle on BB30 cranks are shorter than non BB30 cranks. The shell is the same width as a BSA with the bearings sit inboard the frame whereas they sit outboard on a BSA making the shell+bearing 86mm. I think Cannondale developed the BB30 standard and if you're using their Si cranks then they won't fit non-BB30 cranks.

You can use standard length spindle cranks (Shimano, SRAM GXP etc.) in a BB30 frame by using an adaptor as these position the bearings in a wider position to suit the longer spindle. You cannot however use BB30 carnks on anything other than BB30 frames.

A BB86 BB shell is 41mm in daimeter and will accommodate either 30mm or 24mm axles when you use the right BB bearings. Rotor do longer 30mm spindles on their 3D+ cranks (I think).

I just stuck a new BB86 GXP bracket in my TT bike, Wheels Manufacturing have a plethora of options.

Measure your BB shell width - BB30 shell is usually 68mm wide whilst BB86/90 is 86.5mm i.e. you may need a spindle 18.5mm longer. For press-fit BBs for 41mm dia shells and 30mm spindle, the bearings are very small so don't expect them to last very long.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

The Giant TCR is commonly sold with Shimano chainsets. This is pretty much a good guide to suggest anything BB30 is not going to fit. There is no BB30 frame on the market that comes with a shimano chainset already fitted. Hence why so many bikes get FSA components stuck on them instead. Usually they are PF86 and still will not allow you to use your BB30 chainset on the Giant. Best just stick it on eBay.
  • Strongly suggest these guys - no shims etc and ceramic bearings - I got a 386EVO to fit my Cipo with SRAM Red GXP - very smooth and customer service ace !!!

The pdf bb selector is great :-)
