I'm going to be servicing my wheels and renewing the loose ball bearings while I'm at it. Should I change them for Stainless Grade 100 or Chrome 100 or 10?
I understand that the BB you mostly get from the LBS or Halfords can be grade 1000 is that true?

The lower the number the better (more round) but 100 grade is the norm for bikes. Stainless ball bearings aren't quite as hard (plenty hard enough though), but are great if the bike's used in the wet -no more rusty balls!

Bearing shops will usually be cheaper than the same thing from a bike shop. Grade 10 or 25 steel is usually about the highest grade found on top end bike parts and as mentioned grade 100 is fine for most bike uses. Links here for tutorials on bearing grades https://www.google.com/search?q=loose+b ... 8&oe=utf-8 Basically steel bearings are cheap and you can use Stainless or Chrome so not necessary to do hours of research. Just check the proper hardness and grade. If you have problems with rusty bearings then go with Stainless but usually if everything is properly lubed Chrome steel will be fine.
  • Thanks guys, I know where I'm going with this now.

I have always used grade 10 chrome. Rounder balls do allow any hub regardless of tolerances of the cups and cones to run smoother for longer. If you have anything half decent use grade10 chrome balls and a persistant grease. Some greases are washed out too easily. I avoid stainless balls as they pit mpre easily.
