Will a 8 speed cassette fit onto a 9 speed hub all Shimano spec, & will this need a spacer?

Thanks in advance.

Yup. 8/9/10 speed Shimano freehubs all the same width.

No spacer needed for 8/9 speed cassettes or indeed for 10 speed Tiagra.

You'd need one for 10 speed 105, Ultegra or Dura-Ace
  • Weird, I fitted my old 8 speed cassette on the new wheel/hub last night and had play in the cassette, like the hub was slightly longer, ill measure it tonight. Thanks for all the reply's

You sure it's not a Shimano 11 speed compatible freehub?
  • It could be Keef, but the guy who owns the wheels thinks its a 10 speed hub, but after fitting the 8 speed cassette and lockring (ok I didn't torque it to 40nm) last night, I had play in the cassette, I see the 11 speed hub is about 1.8mm wider than 10 speed.

  • Can I ask please,
If this was an 8 speed cassette on a 11 speed hub ? what size spacer would be needed ?
    Thank you

  • Thank you Svetty
  • Ordered a 1.85mm spacer from ebay and fitted it last night, all sorted now thanks all :)

P.s. it was an 11 speed hub, just to confirm.

A Google search brought me here and answered my question. Thank you.
