I was going to switch to the volcano today, but still feeling under the weather and couldn't be arsed to change the world map .... as it turns out I really enjoyed the Richmond Hilly course today ... I could barely breath when I upped the power, so it was a balancing act keeping the power in at the same time stopping my throat closing up.

still I managed an average of 215w over 45mins, compared to yesterdays 160w ... so I am getting better .... might even have a pop at the WBR ignite tomorrow, I reckon I can stay with the group for half the group before oxygen deprovation takes over ! :D

What I do like about the Richmond course though is the climbs are steep ... but short, so you can do some decent damage and still recover one you get to the top
  • Haha. Your pace when I'll is still better than me at my best.

I tried the GCN fitness test yesterday on sprints ...That killed me just doing the first stage of trying to hold 225w for 10mins !

The real main purpose of the volcano is to create a crit course, 2.6miles for a lap with a lap board to count the number of laps to go. So I think you'll see a lot of racing on that circuit now - would make a difference from Watopia flat forward all the time.
A crit course is a good idea, but they work in the real world because riders have to back off, and brake, to get round tight turns, which allows several 'oh my god' accelerations each lap. Zwift's only failure is that it allows riders to take hairpin bends flat out. Fix that, add some hairpins and it would be epic.

Their software people do have to work on this aspect if they want to keep realism.
Also .. lets stop an overweight rider going faster downhill just because physics dictate it... we all know, that descending is about skill and having the wotsits to do it...

Realism in gaming is not new... that Grand Prix pc game long time back .. with feedback steering wheel etc etc... I couldnt even get the Lotus 49 out of first gear without stalling.

Of course it begs the question of why there are so many World Tour class riders knocking about in basements all over the world...

Enjoyed seeing Adam Yates try a Zwift race on Strava the other day and have to give up almost immediately due to being absolutely smoked.

Presumably it's quite easy to use a dumb trainer and just lie about the resistance setting you're using - and beat everyone?

its also easy for someone to turn pedals at 6w/kg for a mere few laps

Racing on zwift isn't like racing in the real world, the pros can be beaten, all someone has to do is turn the pedals quicker than the other guy for a short amount of time .... its not really in the same realm as a days riding in a real pack.

Hell, even I beat Andre Griepel the other day .... well, when I say "beat", I mean I passed him in a pack of 60 riders and he was out on his own and not racing .. but hey, I counted that as a win :D

I assume the variable surfaces is to pander to those who can afford the expensive trainer jobby that vibrates ...

It's not going to be bad for basking out a flatish session, howberr hoping that volcano road is a decent climb and maybe some more roads off the Alps - really enjoy the challenge of the long climb up the mountain in Zwift

It has variable surfaces? I wouldn't know as I have Tacx road feel turned off 8)
And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made.

There's no difference in road feel on the volcano surface. It's purely visual.

Yeah I'm hoping they add another way to climb the mountain or some turn offs from it.
  • Yeah it's a cool addition with that lava scenery and the Volcano Flat route is super fast because it's so flat, but I still prefer the Watopia Flat course with the ramp up after the sprint section followed by the rollercoaster road back to the start banner. More interesting to ride (and attack on).

I am loving the volcano route more and more .... every time I ride it I end up in a race for a lap with a couple of riders ... next lap recovery .... nexct lap, different race with different riders.

that said, I would prefer a 3 mile loop of the rollercoaster :D

Yeah that's the only issue really with the volcano flat route is that it missed out on of the best parts of the course, that short ramp out of the bridge is great.
