First race of 2017...... 2017 FFS and I tune into the Bike Channel for the Tour Down Under and Liggett comes on.

Come on, he's 73 - isn't anyone going to force that muppet to retire ?

I mean, still feel your pain and all, but I've got other problems with people commenting on cycling. Or never commenting on it, if you understand...

I guess that you're not the only one.

Although I'm a few months older than Phil, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to travel for free to watch races, especially to get away from the cold weather here in the west country.

Exactly what I was thinking during yesterday's coverage.
Phil doesn't have to breathe into a paper bag at the end of each stage.

Phil may check the number and look up who it is, rather than just choose a name from the few he knows from the particular team and run with it for 10 minutes a la Kirby, but he still doesn't know most of the modern Peloton.

As that article states, contrast the tactical insight you get from Millar with the worn out catchphrases you get from Sherwen.

Looking forward to the heads of state dipping into their suitcase of courage.
  • In an utterly bizarre BR take on Snog Marry Avoid, I can just about put up with Liggett's commentary if I have to

Kirby's shrieking makes him untenable as a commentator

he's better than Kirby but failed to notice during stage one that Sagan was on lead out duty and not going for an early \ long sprint.

Not a fan of the adverts the slide into commentary for Australia, but think they are forced into doing that.

I'm happy to snog Liggett for this Australian adventure.

I'm in for the long haul with Hatch, I'd buy matching dinnerware with him.

And I'd avoid Kirby wherever possible

I found it actually quirte comforting to hear Liggett. Its so soothing compared to Kirby's screeching.
It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.

Truly, its like Sophie's Choice but in reverse

Liggett is the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon showing of the TDU.

You watch the TdU real time?

This is the one race I will exclusively watch through the medium of 2 minute last km highlights.

Fair to say it's not and indicator of anything other than for riders who crash.

Abu Dhabi etc also need to be watched on fast forward sadly, they can't do much about their scenery.

    Roll on the classics :D

  • Liggett let himself down yesterday, explaining how Izagirre would lose time as he didn't crash within the last km, until Robbie pointed out the rule changed to 3km in about 2007
  • Hes allowed the odd mistake surely!!! lol... joking aside tho, what on earth is it doing hid away on the Bike Channel...not HD, totally crap quality footage...like watching the Tour in the 70s!
As the season "opener" I would have expected Eurosport to be all over it, or is it just too expensive to ship the entourage out that far? Maybe that's it, it is after all not mainstream sport, and at the moment it would be competing with the Oz tennis open, which seems to FILL Eurosport almost exclusively, oh and Snooker!!

Very races see Eurosport sending any commentators out to the race outside the GTs. They're usually commentating from a room in W London
  • Disappointed this isn't a 'Frenchie returns' thread tbh.

Races have a host provider doing the races locally, in Europe may be the same team for ASO races and other organisers. Those pictures are then sold onto whoever wants to buy them. I assume Bike Channel just bid for the host pictures and host commentary being done by Phil and Paul.

Not sure how many races CK is onsite for, sometimes I think they pretend to be onsite when they aren't

It's a shame David Harmon left, I was a fan of his commentary. Apparently he's now working as media and PR coordinator for the Birmingham Royal Ballet, though I doubt I'll be catching many of their broadcasts this season... :D

Does make you think, though, if there are any cycling phrases that would cross over into the world of ballet?

Its hard to say anything about Phil Liggett without being disparaging because in his pomp, he was good. However, that time past several years ago and now, he's tedious (at best). It's time for him to retire and let Sherwin go back unencumbered to his African mines. Allow the next generation to develop - the good and bad, accepting the next generation will make mistakes along the way of their development.

In Australia we had Robbie McKewan & a guy called Matt Keenan doing the Giro last year and they were really good, but then back to Phil & Paul for the Tour again. The broadcaster had so many calls asking for Robbie & Matt to take over.

Today in the Cadel Evans Road Race we had Phil & Matt Keenan, with special guest Cadel Evans.
Now let me say from the start that I love Cuddles. He is the reason I started following cycling and his World Champs win & Tour win are 2 of my favourite sporting moments I have witnessed. But please don't ever let him commentate again.

A good pairing. Both do a good job and it probably does help Matt Keenan that Robbie McEwen can coherently explain in detail the tactics and moves.

    Just a few things.
You don't control The Bike Channel.
It's obvious The Bike Channel doesn't give a sh*t what you think.
    In short, you don't matter.
