Upgrading disc wheels

Hey everyone. :)

I'm considering upgrading the wheels on my Cannondale Caad 12 disc. They currently have ''Maddux RD 2.0 - Hubs Formula Disc (Front) CX-20 (Rear) CX-22''.

Would I be able to sell these anywhere? If so, would you recommend keeping the discs on the wheels and just purchasing new discs when I purchase my new set of wheels?

Currently considering these as an upgrade: http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Fulcrum-Racing- ... wodKnoOrg#

I'm assuming they are compatible? Any help would be appreciated, cheers. :D

How heavy are your current wheels? Would the racing 5 be much of an upgrade?

1,955kg I believe. Any disc wheels you would recommend? Wasn't planning spending any more than £300 but could stretch further if finance was an option.

Not sure you'll make a significant upgrade for £300. Possibly worth looking on eBay for secondhand wheels. You'll want to check if they're thru axle or quick release as your frame will be one or the other. Also worth checking if your discs are six bolt or centre-lock if you're thinking of keeping them to put on new wheels.

    How about Hunt Disc wheels?
£369 and about 1580g for the pair.

I may be selling a set next month when my new ones arrive.
  • Yeah I'd be able to stretch to £369 for those Hunt wheels which look excellent but If their not going to make a significant difference then perhaps I'm better leaving it just now. I read somewhere that the stock wheels on the CAAD 12 disc were not that great and since I bought the bike for a good price I thought I could perhaps make some upgrades.

Also worth checking out DCR wheels - some good looking handbuilts that come in around the same price as Hunt wheels for a similar/slightly better spec.
  • I recently bought some Borg 22s from Malcolm at Cycle Clinic, who is a regular poster here.

I've found they've been great, feel smoother and faster than my Aksium's.
  • These wheels came with my Synapse Disc, with Schwalbe Lugano tyres. They were my only real disappointment with the bike (aside from the saddle, which is subjective anyway). Wheelset felt sluggish and soft. I was going to put up with them as it's a winter bike/commuter but came across a good deal on a set of Pro Lite Revo A21 disc wheels. Swapped the discs over and put some decent rubber on them and it's made a notable difference, mainly stiffness but losing half a kilo off the weight of the bike hasn't harmed things either. Kept the original wheels as backups just in case.

    Regards, EEM

If you want a noticeably different 'feel' then consider switching to a tubeless set (e.g. the Hunts mentioned earlier). That way you'll save a little weight but more importantly you should actually notice a better/different ride due to the tubeless setup.

Tubeless tyres make a big difference but some tubeless tyres dont see to stand up to flinty roads well.

the fulcrums are likely to be a sidegrade unless they are tubeless compatible. Your current wheels are probably tubeless compatible.

Currently got a Cube Attain GTC Pro with Fulcrum 77s - pretty sure when I do upgrade the wheels it'll be for some Hunt wheels.

The Hunt x Masons are a good set of spinners for sure, however, I think they're just Novatec hubs rebranded with a light-ish rim.

I got lucky and bagged a pair of brand new £1,700 Mavic Carbon SL Disc's on eBay, but they still weigh 1,597g, replacing my 1,982g Mavic Askium Discs.
