What have you guys got? Which is the best for you? I was thinking about Gore, but the one I want is £140. There's Berghaus, but that is from £200 for a good one.

What type of jacket do you want?
Waterproof, wind proof or simply a warm one?

I was thinking about waterproof at the time, but I guess also wind proof and warm ones (might as well ask for the whole hog in one topic).

At the moment I'm using a Sondico jacket with a hood (not the best quality).

Oh, and this topic needs moving. Wrong sub-forum (D'oh!). Should be in buying advice.

    MTBing?

Don't use an expensive jacket or anything expensive like I use for my road biking.

I once used a £300 North face gortext summit range jacket. Fell on the rocks and torn the jackets. I was upset to say the least and learned my lesson. I wear all the clothing that I discard from road racing and I don't care if they get holed or damaged.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Have a look at the Altura Mayhem jacket. On sale for around £80 in lots of places.
For a bit more money the Endura MT500 Waterproof jacket is very nice.

I layer up in the type of weather we are having at the moment: Thin long sleeved base layer, mid layer (MT500 zip up jacket) and the MT500 waterproof on top. The waterproof jacket is very good and has enough vent zips to moderate my temperature when riding.

I'm inferring about the Vapour Storm, which has been about for a few years.

What do you think of the Altura Attack 360? It's on Amazon for £107.

The newest one is £170. Too much.

Will any base layer do? I like the Altura thermacool longsleeve.

I can't seem to find the zip up jacket. Does it have a more specific name?

I like the Gore Bike Wear Oxygen 2.0 Gore-Tex Active over the MT500, mainly because I have the shorts to match. I got the shorts for £38, which I consider a steal.

It's unavailable everywhere. Look nice though.

Any base layer will do. It doesn't have to be cycling specific. I have a few ranging from a super cheap Aldi job to a couple of Helly Hansen ones that I also wear skiing. A base layer is just a base layer.

This is the MT500 Jacket. Wiggle are selling it for £45.

The Altura Attack 360 looks very nice and BikeRadar gave it a very favourable review a while ago.

That Gore Active jacket is marketed as a roadie item and I would be concerned it may be a bit tight for MTB'ing, but that depends on your build.

    Good. I have many Sondicos!

Are there any Gore MTB jackets? I am looking for something to go with the shorts.
  • I prefer to wear several layers of warm/windproof/whatever clothing. I even wear two (sometimes three) layers of socks, two layers of leg clothing, three or more layers over torso. The name of the style is "cheap and expendable" (not just during winter). When I fall, get dirty, or otherwise screw up the clothing, I don't want to be losing sleep over it. I just want to look at it, say "whatever" and carry on.
  • I even wear two (sometimes three) layers of socks,

Same, I go for Thinny Merinos, Thicky Merinos and Goretex army.
    two layers of leg clothing,

I prefer knee warmers (sportful) tucked into my outer socks and a 3/4 or trouser waterproofs (Altura Attacks or Humvee waterproofs).
three or more layers over torso.

Base layer, long sleeved jersey, and a tracksuit hoodie for me.

    Fair enough.

I found a MTB Gore Jacket:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Mou ... gore+alp+x

Wrong size for me though (I am a L).

    For a waterproof jacket I have this - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/gore-bike-wear-power-trail-gt-as-jacket-aw16/rp-prod153887?gs=1&gclid=CjwKEAiA2OzDBRCdqIyIqYaaqQoSJABeJZdiFGCcIJq-rPzxk5ZsI8XVPhR-tllizQk3CoaAYHLdnRoCxCLw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Close fitting but not roadie tight, so less flapping about in the wind. Breathes well.

For a softshell, I have a Gore Alp X, has removable sleeves so versatile and a Fox Bionic trail jacket. Both very good, just depends on what you want.

Unfortunately none of my size are available.

The Gore is £100 and the Fox is £75 (wrong size for me, however on CRC). I will probably get the Gore. The Fox is available at £133.

I've got this particular Gore. Excellent fit, super well made, all the features you could want. I'd definitely buy another.

    You talk to your clothes?

But I agree. Plenty of layers and an old yellow £5 outer jacket which gets covered in mud. I use sock 1 then supermarket bag then sock 2 on my feet. Oh yes and trainers. Wash the stuff once a month and I go out daily usually in the forest.

I respect the quality and style of clothing but am not sufficiently bothered by it and the lesson of trashing it is hard.
...take your pickelf on your holibobs.... :D

    jeez

    Guess they're made of fur.

Plastic bags? You know they have holes in the bottom... not exactly Goretex, but every little helps...

An old yellow £5 outer jacket and plastic bags to keep the sweat in and wash once a month...

FishFish must refer to the smell.

You wear plastic bags? Is Brexit really hitting you that hard you can't afford some sealskinz?

He gets to exchange them for free when he rips them. Cost effective!

Oh chabaladunga, didn't notice that. It's actually pretty funny. Typically, when I damage some of the more expensive articles of clothing (which I don't do often, not even when drunk), I make a whole lot of vulgar remarks about the situation right on the spot and then I'm all grumpy for a few hours.

Which is why I'm not buying expensive shoes, jerseys or other cycling attire. During prime season, I ride daily and once some clothes get thrown into the "for riding" category, I'm not expecting them to last for more than one season. Even if it doesn't get torn in the first season, it gets completely washed-out the other.
  • I got the Altura 360, in black (was going to go night vision green/yellow, but I would have to wear a blindfold to cope).

The fit is good, but the jacket seems a little short.

Maybe I will get the Gore as well, hehe.

My gore has failed me: no hood (recently the zip went, and it won't re-attach) meant I got soaked. So I am looking for a jacket that has a hood and that preferably goes over the helmet. I experimented with their waterproof hat, but it wasn't enough without a hood to keep me dry. So I'm in the market again for a waterproof jacket.

The Altura Attack 360 for some reason left me soaked as well... it basically doesn't work, even though it has a hood. That was a £100 down the toilet... sigh.
