I have just brought a new (second hand) MTB with a 1x10 set up.It came with a 30 and 34 tooth chainring with 11_36 cassette but as I'm getting on in age and a bit ,well a lot overweight I'm having to push up some hills that i could get up on my last one which was 2x 10 even with the smaller chainring

I've been reading about a 42 tooth expander or 11-42 tooth cassette.my question is which is better and will it work with my derailleur which is a Slx m675.I've no idea if its a medium or long reach or will I need a new one.

The more I read the internet the more confused I get.I think if its a long reach it would work but how do I tell(it has a clutch if that helps)

Any help much appreciated

Any SLX will work with an 11-42 setup, you may (not necesarily) need a longer B-screw is all.

It depends on what cassette you have now as to whether it can be used with an expander or not, if you need to get a new cassette it's cheaper to buy an 11-40 or 11-42 cassette either by Sunrace (about £50) or Praxxis (about £100).

I'm using an 11-40 Sunrace with a short cage XTR without any issue.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • The cassette is shimano m771 10 speed.its new ish so loads of life left in it.

Do you think I would be better with a sunrace cassette or a expander or is there no real difference

    Thanks for advice.

if you have the M771 with two lots of three on spiders and then loose gears you can use an expander, you have to remove one of gears 7 and 8, but ideally you lose both and replace with a single gear in between to keep the gear ratio steps progressive (otherwise one of those shifts is like shifting two gears at once with no options). By the time you have done that it's probably better to buy a Sunrace and sell yours.

Useful info here including the M771
