Hi

I have a mtb with 29" wheels currently shod with schwalbe smart sams

Doing a canal towpath / road trip next month of approx 250 miles and looking for a less aggressive / less rolling resistance tyre as I won't be hitting the mud / off road etc

Any recommendations ??

Cheers

Kenda Small Block8's still retain a fair amount of grip on off road surfaces but roll well on tarmac, and you could consider a CX tyre width of say 35-38mm to cut drag further.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • 700x38c Marathon Cross roll very well on the road, had them on my FatNotFat 29er wheels since last summer, got my pair for £40 (from http://nextdaytyres.co.uk/details.aspx/ ... TB-29/1897) but they have gone up in price a little like many things! Performed fine on a short, mixed terrain ride a little earlier.

Not tried them yet, but I have a pair of 29x2.3 http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TYOOBSC1/on-one-bsc-type-1 sitting in the spares box, which are supposed to be decent for mixed terrain, they are rebranded Vee Speedsters.

For the ultimate in low rolling resistance, I suspect Schwalbe G-Ones are right up there, there are now "all round" and "speed" variants, but they are not cheap (which is why I've not taken the plunge yet). Choice of typical CX size (~35c) or 2.35 if you have the clearance and desire for something more balloon bike-esque.

On my CX bike which has 29" MTB wheels I have WTB Nano's 40c they are fast and pretty grippy for what you are doing, on my rims they come up at 42mm.
Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"

Did you read the question or just the title?

  • I find the towpaths are bad for thorns - hawthorn trees seem to be very popular along the banks. So I wouldn't get something too lightweight.
Do you know what the tow path surfaces will be like? They're easy riding in urban areas but some of them can be a right slog once you get out in the cabbages, riding on a muddy stripe along a river bank - surprisingly hard graft. So that's another reason not to go too light on the tires.
