Hi,

I have just received a set of Garmin Vectors as a warranty replacement and I believe they are under reading. However, whenever I delete a bike profile on my Garmin and create a new one selecting Automatic crank length it is back to normal.

Any help would be good

Why do you think the strava estimate is genuine? The ride was truely 232W measured by your power meter.

Its like saying "my speedometer tells me i'm going at 15mph but i feel like i was going at 20mph. It has to be 20mph and not 15moh, surely i'm not that shît of a rider".

Reset the Vectors using the Vector Updater software.

How do you know they're under reading? Are you comparing them with another PM such as a PT or turbo with power? You should also keep in mind that there is variation between all power meters, even in the same model (+/-2% could equal a 4% discrepancy). A PT will allow you to take slope into account across different devices so you know where you are.

  • Hi,

I am comparing it to a stages G2 crank.

And also feel, have been using power for years. For example 1 hour 2 days ago on turbo heart rate 154 power 281, yesterday heart rate 163 power 232.

I'm confused, are these a warranty replacement for an earlier set of Vectors? Are they reading low compared to those?

    You sound like you are suffering from the old adage, which I can't recall the exact wording or context of, but goes something like;
If you have two power meters giving two different readings, all you know is that you have two inaccurate power meters.

If you can get a third source of measurement that agrees with one of them, then you will know where the problem lies - send that one back for replacement/calibration.

Before that you might want to look at updating/resetting the Garmin firmware, and manually setting crank length - it will be written on the inside of your cranks.

Heart rate has nothing to do with it.

Stages is crap. I have one and it's laughably off compared to my other 4 PMs. Do you have two Garmins? Have you seen how they compare on the same ride?

I dont think you use it... but I'd recommend staying off Zwift then.... if you think a Stages PM is laughable... wait until you get the Zwift race elite wetting themselves over their smart trainers and their power output.

As you've just received the vectors, may be worth checking they're torqued up correctly.
I've still got the version 1 and low torque = low readings.

Check the garmin forum out. There seems to be a recurring issue where dropouts occur on one pedal, this causes power to underread. The severity and frequency of the dropouts vary but you can see if you've got the issue by either (a) analysis that your fit file in something like GC or garmin connect (not as detailed), you're looking for lots of 0% reads on one side; (b) by bringing up the cycling dynamics page in your garmin as you read, you'll see the same symptom.

I had a vector set that garmin ultimately swapped that had the same problem. Sometimes I would get an unusable power meter during the ride but more often I would get under reported power. The replacement pedals resolved my problem.
