Toptube or Crossbar?

Was talking to my brother over Christmas and the conversation got onto bicycles. The bro is a petrolhead and he was fumbling for words to describe parts of his MTB. He came up with 'tower' for the cassette and used that quaint old term 'crossbar'. Got me wondering which term originated first and where they came from. I suspect 'crossbar' is an olde English term and went out of fashion as Raleigh started to decline.
