From edge 800 to 820 or 1000?

After some thoughts and opinions on the Edge 820 and 1000. Currently have the 800 and have loved it for 2 years. Skipped the 810 as it seemed to be a terrible unit in terms of bugs, but I would like to upgrade and take advantage of bluetooth wifi for uploading to Strava rather than always using the usb :-/

  • One of the key upsides of the 1000 is also its greatest drawback - it's big and can be a problem to fit - especially because of the 1/4 turn mount. You'll need the larger sizes of out front mount - Garmin supply one but it mutes the beeping which is a classic Garmin cock-up.

There's masses more functionality on it than there was when I first got one and it's been a while since it had a bug (it had loads when it was launched).

You're wise to avoid the 810 - I can't tell you much about the 820.

Don't bother with the 820 its bobbins. Have a look on the garmin forums and do a search on here and you will find the vast majority of 820 owners are unhappy.

I moved from the 800 to a 1000 and am very happy, no issues whatsoever, and at the end of a ride it automatically uploads all the data to my phone so I can see all the info, I've not needed to log in on my main computer since I've had it, really good bit of kit and thoroughly recommended.

I went from an 810 to an 820 simply because of the 810 being rendered unreliable by the introduction of the 520 when Garmin used the same firmware and updates caused problems. The 810 was a great device and still is if you can do without the upgrades to the firmware.

The 820 is also a great device, but my bug with it is the screen size. Being long sighted, its too small. With the 810 I could comfortably read 5 data fields on the move, but with the 820 I have to reduce that to 3. For someone that has no sight issues, it wouldn't be a problem. The screen sensitivity can be temperamental in that one day it will be overly sensitive and the next not respond. Wearing winter gloves, forget it. Not so much of an issue for me as I simply leave it on 3s power, cadence and speed. Following a course, turn by turn prompts still come up and disappear when done. One issue that I have discovered is the screen locking when auto paused at coffee stops. The device will not resume no matter what buttons or combinations are pressed. The only answer so far is to stop the ride and start again.

The 1000 is simply too big in my opinion.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • I'm a 1000 user and it's fantastic.

Echo the shout above about the out-front mount, it definitely needs one, but no problems with the sound for me?

Love the auto-routing function on it, has given me some great rides.

That's interesting - is there some openings in the mount - I'm just wondering if they've fixed it? The sound is fine with the "strap-on" mounts but the out-front mount muffles it almost completely.

  • Reasonably happy with my 1000 - tried downsizing to an 820, but concur with PaulMon, it has way too many issues with the touch screen, altitude calibration and more, so I returned it and stuck with the 1000, which for the best part has worked as expected. I bought a Lifeline mount from Wiggle - very good, it drops it down in line with the bottom of the bars which makes it easier for me to read. Baffling that they can get the screen right on the 1000 yet completely screw it up on the later 820.
  • I like the 820, but I don't really use the touchscreen much while riding with long fingered gloves so that isn't an issue. Turn by turn following routes is excellent.

Had a 1000 for a long while, very happy with it, it's a great unit. There's no problem with the sound on the out front mount, but I use the k-edge one as I prefer it to the garmin version.

Personally I like the large screen on the 1000 (I came from an 800) but I have would take a long look at the 820, it looks like a lovely unit. Garmin new products tend to have bugs for the first 6 months, they invariably get ironed out quite quickly so I wouldn't be put off by issues the early buyers have. They seem to have decided that paying customers are the best testers, it's annoying...

I can agree with most of what you've written except this. Give it a year to 18 months in my experience (Various Forerunners from 305 onwards and Edge 800 and 1000). 6 months into the 1000 and it was still riddled with bugs and didn't even have the features they'd promised at launch.

No sound issues for me either

Had a 800 and went for a 1000 early 2016 and it's great. Very happy customer

Yup - that's nearly two years after it was launched so it will be OK by then. I bought one in April 2014 and it was so hopeless it went back - too many faults to list (and mine didn't even exhibit the worst and most common fault). I bought another a year later and it still had some minor faults. It's fine now.

Think you have that be patient and wait for the bugs to be fixed

I have the 800. Its collecting dust.

Try the phone with IPBIKE app. It will be a bit of a challenge to set up but once did you probably won't go back to any dedicated cycle computer. It just doesn't make sense to spend that kind of money on some rubbish hardware. Even when I bought the 800 I thought they were over priced for what you pay for. £350 paid and close to a full fledged nexus phone.

Garmin 1000 still cost over £320 and add a bit more you can get Samsung Galaxy S7. No comparison.

All high end cycle computer try to offer you the ability to have limited phone abilities such as getting messages and phone notifications. Why not just have the phone in front of you instead? You can call and text back asap.

Try it. Hopefully in time the there will be more refined apps that will render all cycle computer pointless.

    I can give you a few reasons why most of us use dedicated cycle computers;
    - ant+ connectivity (though this will start to become less relevant)
    - battery life
    - a touch screen designed to work when wet or with gloves
    - waterproof
    - your phone stays in a better protected spot if you need it for an emergency, for instance you've crashed

Using a phone might be an option for a hobbyist cyclist doing 1 or 2 hours around the block with limited sensors but for anything more you really need dedicated hardware.

Fair, though I think the 1000 was a particularly bad example of issues. I've got a forerunner 735xt I use for running/tri and it works really well with zero bugs, I think that was launched Aug time. I'd still go 6 months to have most things resolved though I don't disagree with you re the 1000 timescale from launch. Either way garmin should wise up and start testing these things better before launch, its poor.

Thanks for the feedback. Decided I am going to skip the 820 as I don't like the idea of a slighter smaller screen as I use touchscreen quite a lot and my eyes aren't great). Will start to have a look for some good deals for the 1000.

I can live with the USB until a slighter better deal comes out for the 1000.

    Cheers

MRS, have you found a different out-front mount which cures the muffled sound? I have the 1000 mounted to the stem on one bike and it's nice and clear, but on the other (on the standard Garmin out-front mount) it's pretty much mute.

That's exactly my problem so I'll be looking at Ascot17's suggestion.
