  • Whichever way you go, you are about 40-50 miles away from some decent climbs... being that Wales, Bowland, Cheshire or Peak District

I dunno. About 30 miles to Hope Mountain. Can't remember the rules about cycling thru the tunnel so prob best getting the train thru to the wirral and heading that way. Some good climbing round that way. Pop into the Eureka if you can.

100 miles is nothing though. Already popped into eureka but they are closed now til jan. I will be getting the train over as i have tried ring round already faff though and i found it hard to avoid dual carriageways.

I anticipate that you will be visiting Norfolk and Cambridgeshire in the coming weeks.

West of Chester :) (aka Wales)
  • Cat and Fiddle from Macclesfield is one of the longest in the country. On the way there you can do the cobbled Swiss Hill from Alderley Edge

Hart Hill round by Bollington is probably as Hilly as it gets. Or kelsall hill to the sandstone trail must be at least two miles of climbing?

Get the train to Chester, head out from there into north east wales. Cycling plus did a nice looking route in the last edition, includes the horseshoe pass and bwlch pen areas which are nice. I can dig out the link to the route if you're interested.
  • When I lived in the area this was my favourite ride. I suggest getting the train to out to Eastham from the centre of Liverpool and then ride back to B/Head and get the ferry across the Mersey.

Hard to imagine now, I used to ride over Worlds End on 42x21.

Unfortunately the Eureka Cafe is closed to the New Year.

The 'difficult' part is using the cycle lanes to cross over the River Dee. Simplest solution is to find a wheel and follow. Plenty of cyclists about.

You were good to me, over a pair of wheels I bought and sent back, so a small gesture in return.

As Ugo says there's plenty of hills in Cheshire they're just all over to the Derbyshire border. Highest point in Cheshire is 560m at shining tor just up the ridge from cat and fiddle.

Brickworks, Kerridge, Windgather, Blaze Hill, Pym Chair and a few others I've missed plus what Ugo says above. Nice route if you do Swiss Hill on the way to the Cat.

Also I ride from Ormskirk just north of Liverpool often and you can do Rivington Pike in a reasonable ride from there.

Be careful, it looks very icy... wouldn't want to go down steep descents

I have to start working off the christmas excess. My mum is somewhat of a feeder, lovely food but so much of it and she keeps making more and then there is the drink sommuch wine, port, desert wines, whiskey......

It was not icey on the roads (plenty of ice at the side of the roads) thankfully but i did have to be a bit more cautious on the decents. Wheather was good till about 2:30pm then i entered freezing fog and ride back through that to liverpool. I wasa tad slow though. The bit that really scared me was coming down the south side of fhe horse shoe pass and seeing a sign for a cattle grid while doing 35mph gulp.

    Top ride there Malcolm.
  • There's no doubt something closer to Liverpool, but thinking back to my youth, there are a few hills on the west side of Wirral, around West Kirby and Thursaston.
