I hate the which ones do I get posts, but I’m really struggling here so here goes.

Firstly any feedback on the Pinnacle Dolomite 5/6 by Evans?
It seems for the money you get 105 and Shimano hydraulic disks and it looks pretty good value.

For me at least this would be a no brainer but I’ve brought into the whole Giant sales pitch about the quality of their frames and so I’ve been looking at the Giant Contend SL1 Disc.

The Giant is also 105 but some funny semi hydraulic disc set up. Component wise the Pinnacle wins, but do people think I’ll be losing anything in terms of the frame over the Giant contend.

Thanks in advanced,

  • If you want full 105, carbon frame and hydraulic discs, you can get a 2016 Cube Attain GTC Pro disc for less than a grand.

I've just bought one and it's superb.

I've got a Pinnacle Dolomite 6 - it's my all weather winter bike.

I can't fault it - seems comfortable for longer distances, and everything works well, especially the brakes.

Evans seem to discount this bike frequently - I think I paid about £1,100.

Also, bear in mind that you have linked to the 2017 model. The 2016 model is available on their website at a good discount. Not sure of the difference in specs though.

That is a stand-out bargain, and likely what I'd be having if I was looking for a bike at the moment.
  • Thanks for all the comments.

I did realise the link was to the 2017 model, the 2016 looks a bargin.

I cant use rutland with the cycle to work scheme Im tied in to, otherwise the cube looks great for the money.

Been to my lbs today and i think im sold on a 2016 giant defy advanced 1. Carbon, ultegra but mechanical disc and 11/28 rear cassette.

It doesnt tick all the boxes but not bad for £1300. Im thinking 12 months down the line upgrade the cassette, and sometime later upgrade the brakes if i feel the need.

    Thanks again for the responses
  • That Giant looks good value but I don't see it as a competitor for the Pinnacles depending on your requirements, as it hasn't got mudguard or rack mounts. I bought a 2016 Dolomite 5 as my new commuter / winter / wet weather bike and for those roles it is superb. It takes 28mm tyres with SKS chromoplastics fitted. I can't believe how much better full proper mudguards are compared to crud roadracers etc.
  • Hi Del, you right the defy isnt the best as an out right commuter, winter bike, but as Im only allowed one road bike (i have 3 mtbs) its going to be used for everything from 100k sportives to my 10k commute.

All a bit of a compromise, would be ideal if the defy could have better brakes and and 11-32 cassette, but guessing the compromises will be worth it for the frame.
