Shimano 105 Niggle

I have just upgraded (from 10 - 11 speed) and fitted a 105 setup to my road bike. It works fine, it is an improvement on the original (which was pretty good anyhow). I have fitted a medium cage RD around a 11-32 rear cassette. However, in my obsessive pursuit of perfection, I have noticed a very slight clicking/ticking when on the 7th cog of the 11/32 rear sprocket - this implies that the chain is not right where it should be. Elsewhere, all is smooth silence. When I attempt to clear that by using the rear barrel adjuster, the click goes away but then change up to cogs 8,9 10 etc is then very slow or stops. I have swapped cassettes (I bought a spare for the turbo) but the slight click remains.

I suppose I have to accept that I am caught between one issue and another. However, I just wondered if there was some other adjustment or finer adjustments, I could make.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Your assuming the tick is due to indexing, I eliminated the tick on mine by adjusting the b-tension slightly, the chain wasn't feeding into the sprocket cleanly from the jockey and would tick as it slipped home. I bet that once I'd done a few hundred miles it wouldn't have been so fussy but brand new chains can be picky.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Thank you I will try that.
  • is the cassette an 105 11sp? did you set the b -tension screw according to shimano specs. the medium cage rd of 105 is quite unique from others as it features a large teeth guide pulley that I ,to the time being, have no idea of its cause.

"Mount the chain on the smallest chairing and the largest sprocket, and turn the crank arm backward. Turn the B-tension adjust bolt to adjust the guide pulley to be as close to the sprocket as possible but not so close that it touches. Next, set the chain to the smallest sprocket and repeat the above to make sure that the pulley does not touch the sprocket."
