Gamification Research

Dear road cyclists - could I please get your help with the research I'm doing into gamification of mobile applications within the health and fitness domain. For most of you, that probably translates as "Strava"

Thanks so much!

Done - and a better survey than most on here. But Q14 is weak, as you fail to correlate with reasons for exercise. Given scope, I would have answered:I prefer to do structured training on my own (as my structure will only be appropriate to me) but otherwise prefer the social aspects of exercise, including competition.
You might want to think about tools other than apps as well - e.g. our gym has a Wattbike competition (max avg watts over 3 mins), I use Sufferfest videos to structure training (but not the app) and have used GoldenCheetah (which is a PC application, not an app). You might also want to think about the "gamification" IRL of things like Sportives, with unofficial "winners", "gold/silver/bronze" finish times and suchlike. It would also be interesting to see if there is a positive or inverse correlation between propensity to adopt gamification and participation in actual competition - I would intuitively suspect inverse, but that would make an interesting study.
There's a chap on here somewhere (too lazy to search, sorry) posting some blogs on the sociology of cycling (esp club cycling). I think his methods are questionable and his conclusions likewise, but you might find it interesting reading.0 -
I guess I must be different to the chaps above as I thought it to be a rubbish survey. I use Strava to map all my rides (using a Garmin) but don't use it as a mobile app when riding. Hence, by about question 4 the survey just became pointless afaict. Why not have a leader that starts with "If you don't use mobile apps when riding then give up on this survey now". All the disclaimer stuff can be at the end because many wont get there.0

I thought it was poor.
I use strava but not on a phone so am I using a mobile application or not? Then some of te other questions, are you referring to the specific context of using an app or in general - do I enjoy games, what motivates me etc.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
Firstly, thanks so much for those that have filled out the survey - I really appreciate your time. Some people have ticked "No" to the questions regarding awareness of purpose and privacy and regarding age. I can't use your data.
Also thanks so much for the feedback. It's true that it's a complex area. Anybody using one of the more recent Garmins (at least) will be using a mobile app (there is, after all, an app function on the device). Also, I think where GPS device users are uploading afterwards to Strava etc, it's worth considering those as mobile functionality. I'm particularly interested in the social media aspect of gamification and how much that motivates people.
Part of this research is to understand the landscape and looking for themes. It isn't perfect but all of the responses will help paint the picture. Thank you again.0 -
Would it be possible to add a small note about what counts as a mobile application or not - this may be obvious to some but to the more luddite amongst us who did not grow up with them it may not be obvious what is and what isn't one. Also the stuff on for example "what motivates you" - would that be better with some context - lots of things motivate me but depends what we are talking about - you may think it's not open to misinterpretation but I wasn't sure exactly what you were asking which kind of makes it impossible to answer iyswim.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

Yes - that's helpful feedback. As part of my submission I need to critique my survey too so I really appreciate your comments - thank you.0

Free format text is a nightmare to data mine, if you get tons of responses that is.0

Dear All - thanks so much for your input - I'm incredibly grateful.
One last call for subjects to supply input.
