I know this has been a similar problem before with forum members but I'm having the problem of my MacBook Pro not recognising my Garmin 1000. Tried restarting both devices etc. Garmin won't update from Software Version 10.00 to 11.00.
has anyone any advice?

My MacBook Pro (2012) / Garmin 520 is very sensitive to the cable I'm using... if I connect them with a thin, cheap USB cable then the computer won't recognise the Garmin at all. Replace is with a thicker, better quality cable and they'll pair immediately.0

Had this recently with my pc, I thought that a any standard micro usb lead would work but every lead I tried had the same result. I bought a replacement from ebay with garmin 800 in the title and it now works. The pin out must be slightly different on garmin usb leads. Make sure you are using the lead that came with be device. My garmin 800 can be put into usb mode by doing the following steps.
1. with unit turned off insert lead into unit
2. Keep the lap/reset pressed down.
3. insert lead to pc.
4. after the pc recognizes the devive release lap/reset button.
I can then see my device as a usb drive.
not sure if this will work on a garmin 10000 -
A cable sold on eBay with 'Garmin 800' in the title is no more likely to work than any other cable!
Agree though that a different cable is likely to solve your problem.0 -
Usb mini has 5 pins. Pin 1 is 5v and pins 2 and 3 are data. Pin 4 is not connected and 5 is ground. It looks like garmin short pins 4 to pin 5 and this is what puts their devices into mass storage mode. If pin 4 goes open then your pc will not see the device. You can still put the device is mass storage mode as I have already explained. I have about 8 unused mini cables and none worked. Pin 4 is not shorted on those.0

With the sole exception of a single "charge only" USB cable - every physically compatible cable has worked for me in every case. The "charge only" cable threw me - I really didn't think it was worth anyone's time or effort to omit the data conductors from the design. It was decanted smartly into the nearest bin.
Caveat: I acquire my USB cables exclusively from reputable sources - ie. not the pound shop/etc. Doesn't mean I spend thousands on USB cables - in the last year I've bought 3 (very short ones to tidy the area containing the 6 output charger) for a total cost of £50
