Quick Links

I'm planning on swapping groupsets on a couple of bikes. Summer bike is running Tiagra, winter 105 - I want to swap 105 onto summer and Tiagra onto winter.

Trying to put a list together of what I'll need (cables, bar tape etc) and came to chains. Chains on both bikes are fairly new - probably less than 200 miles on each. If I bought KMC quick links would I be able to re-use both chains?

I've never used them before (quick links) but for the sake of a few quid might save me £20/30 in new chains.

  • Sure would.

Cheers - I thought that's how they worked but just wanted to make sure.

I might need new chains anyway as the length is likely to vary between the different frames, but would like to re-use what I can and keep any chains bought as spares.

Just be careful about which links are reusable and which are not. For instance, 9 speed Missing Links are fine but 11 speed cannot be reused.

The SRAM ones are also a mixed bag so just make sure you are clear in what does what.

Tbh, probably not fussed about re-using down the road.
  • Oh & shop around - they can be as little as 60p or as much as £6 for the same single link
  • Well I'm using them to put on a chain that's 2 weeks old. About 160 miles use before a link broke during an accident. I'm hoping the chain is still OK and a quick link will be.enough. I hope the chain is still ok.

BTW if not could I just replace it? The cassette and chain are only 160 miles of use I'd hope that's not meaning I need to replace cassette too
  • If it's just for a one off change, have you considered just using Shimano pins? Generally cheaper:

With the price of chains though it might not even be worth spending that let alone £6 for a missing link.

On your last question, the general rule of thumb seems to be 3 chains per 1 cassette so no need to replace the cassette yet.

How did your chain break by the way? Sounds a bit odd. Was it where you joined it?
