old chain new speed link?

speed link, master link, missing link etc. Is it ok to fit one to an existing chain? The chain isn't old but then I don't see new ones with them filled. I can't believe I don't know this. :cry:

  • I certainly did the first time I had to take the chain off mine. Fitted a detachable link and refitted it. Chain had ~500 miles on it before the link was fitted and did another ~1000 or so afterwards with no issue.

    Every chain since then has been fitted with a quick link at the outset (whether it came with one or not)

    I've done it many times on my MTB chains - standard for rejoining after shortening them. Most you can take off and reuse as well - such as for cleaning the chain. I've come across Shimano chains with no missing link when fitted - preferring to use a pin to rejoin but I think that technology has been superseeded for MTB.

    I really hate those tinned Fray Bentos pies you know.
