Tyre change ...

Currently running wire bead Maxxis Ardent 2.4 (27.5) on the back, set up tubeless ... and an On-One Chunky Monkey, again 2.4, tubeless, on the front.

Rear is wearing out so looking to replace to keep traction going now the trails have turned sloppy. Been very happy with the Ardent, looking probably for a folding bead - is there anything else better for £20-30 to replace it with?

I used to have an Ardent on the front too, but its rounded profile doesn't make it very good in mud. Swapped it earlier in the year for a Chunky Monkey, which was cheap, but I'm not convinced by its performance ... its been 'OK', but I'm looking for something better without spending silly money.

So, budget is around £20-£30 per end ... would go a bit more at the front (but would mean a cheaper rear)

Bike is an On One 45650b, so I appreciate the extra volume of 2.3/2.4 rubber. Rear needs to roll well, front needs to have good, predictable bite in a range of conditions, without being too draggy.

Useage is mostly local trails & singletrack, roots, some rocks, mud (dust in the better weather), with occasional trail centre stuff or weekend trips to Wales, Lakes, Peaks. Looking for a 'do it all' combo for all year use rather than specific winter/mud or summer/dust options.

For that price I'd look at Specialized Purgatory on the front and Ground Control on the rear. Both come in 2.3" and are easy to set up tubeless.

  • So these then ...

Assume they are the real deal? Bargainacious at the price.

Can't find the Ground Control (in 650bx2.3 flavour) for under £30 though ... would the Purgatory work on the back, or is it too much tyre for decently rolling rubber?

Ground Control not great on the back in winter, just changed mine although I went for 29" Storms as it gets proper muddy where I ride. Purgatory front and Butcher rear are what Specialized fit as standard these days IIRC, supposed to be a good set up.

I've used ground control tyre in winter before but it does clog up in muddy sections, if the thread was wider spaced it clear easily.

I've been looking at butcher front and purgatory rear for my mega or just to stick on some nobby nics.

JGTR - I was put off spesh tyre due to thin sidewalls do the grid versions improve on the rubbish s-works versions of past?

Only ever split one tyre, Storm Control, and that was on the main tread due to a bit of flint. Haven't had any problems with the Ground Controls or Purgatories - although I rarely ride rocks/hard core stuff, just woodland trails and foot paths mainly.

Isn't a Chunky Monkey too wide for the mud anyway? I thought narrower was better in slop.

Son has Maxxis Beaver's front and rear for the sloppy conditions, very happy with them and not unreasonable cost.
