Hi folks,

I'm a newbie and I'm hoping someone much wiser than me can point me in the right direction...

I recently decided I'd invest in a new mountain bike. Many YouTube videos and magazine reviews later and I'm still stuck on what to pick. Initially I was looking at spending no more than £400 but the budget has slowly crept up to £600.

Having looked at previous Hardtail of the Year winners my attention was drawn to the Vitus Nucleus first, and then the Sentier when I decided to increase my spend. I have been comparing the Sentier 650b 2016 to the Cube Acid 29" 2016. Initially they were both £600. The Cube is now on offer for £500 on Chain Reaction's site.

I've kind of thrown the Diamondback Heist 2.0 2016 into the mix too.

I'm 6'3 so with Cube sizing I'd have to have a 29er.

I'd be using the bike for canal towpaths, woodland trails and a rare bit of road-riding.

Which would be considered the best buy? Please share your wisdom with me and help me to decide.

Thanks in advance!

  • First of all get your self a British cycling membership. For £21 you will get 10% off at chain reaction or Halfords.

The voodoo bizango is a very high rated budget bike. It's won bike raiders budget bike for years. For £540 with you bc discount it's a great bike.

Alternative look at second hand. Some amazing bikes out there if you have cash.

Yer the Voodoo always wins the £600 bike tests so you can't go wrong there.

Other than that I would pick the Cube as my last to Cubes have been brilliant.
Cube Reaction GTC Pro 27.5 2017 Grey / Yellow Flash
    Ribble R872 Ultegra
    Skyway BMX
  • I ride a cube attention. 2 negatives that I've experienced so far:

    1. QR on the wheels instead of through axles. Might be a preference thing, but I'd prefer through axles.
    2. 27.2mm seatpost makes it difficult to find a dropper post.

Apart from the above, I love it. The smart Sam Tyres arent great in the muddy wet stuff apparently. That might assist your decision too.

    Best of luck!
