The Colorado Trail

I'm now very keen on mountain biking after a recent trip to the Brecon Beacons. I'm considering doing the Colorado Trail next year and I was wondering if anyone who's done it before could suggest where to begin, where to hire mountain bikes, or whether you should take your own bike in a bike box etc. I can imagine that it all takes a lot of planning and some advice would be really appreciated!
